25 May laudato si´week/peru
Our community of Chota, motivated by the call of Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si’, where he tells us, “More than in ideas or concepts as such, I am interested in how such a spirituality can motivate us to a more passionate concern for the protection of our world….Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.” (LS 216, 217)
For Laudato Si’ Week during this lockdown period, the seven Sisters who comprise the community have distributed a chapter of the encyclical to each member (the sixth chapter was divided between two sisters) and on the 22nd at 4:00 pm each one made a 15 minute creative and reflective presentation of a chapter of the encyclical. S. Doris, as the one in charge of coordination of JPIC, gave each a bookmark which alludes to the care of creation as well as a keyring made from pop-tabs from cans?, to motivate us to recycle and re-use.
Furthermore, Sisters Yeraldin and Doris made motivational videos and posted them on the community Facebook page, 20 radio slots of REPAM (Pan-Amazonia Ecclesial Network) in order to make an appeal for the care of creation.
AS EDUCATORS
We feel the call of Pope Francis, when in Laudato Si’ he makes an appeal that from our educational platforms we work for a partnership between humanity and the environment. He tells us: “It needs educators capable of developing an ethics of ecology, and helping people, through effective pedagogy, to grow in solidarity, responsibility and compassionate care. Yet this education, aimed at creating an “ecological citizenship”, is at times limited to providing information, and fails to instil good habits.” (LS 210-211)
Now due to the pandemic, we are conducting virtual classes in the Institute “Nuestra Señora de Chota,” with 20 students, who are preparing via WhatsApp or other platforms to be future teachers of Physical Education, English, Early Childhood Education and Mathematics. We have sent a great deal of material, which will go out during Laudato Si’ Week to raise awareness in order to motivate the students to ecological conversion.
