Las Mañanitas Youth Center and Library was founded by the alumnae of the school of the Handmaids in Panama with the goal that the children of the neighborhood of Las Mañanitas, many of whom had access to few resources, would have a physical space and personal attention in order to do their homework.
In addition to support for doing homework, the Center offers sociocultural and sports activities: workshops in painting, music, reading, handcrafts and sports.
The Center has contracted personnel as well as volunteers; among the latter are the students of the school of the Handmaids who come each Saturday to the Center in order to carry out recreational activities and tutoring with the children of the neighborhood.
With this informal educational project they offer the youth tools that will enable them to discover their abilities and develop the skills necessary for their future employment.
A project that fosters processes of change and improvement, it raises self esteem and the awareness of their possibilities. It develops a critical attitude toward their reality and enables them to take charge of their lives.
